The Jesus and Mary Chain, the progenitor of everything from indie rock to shoegaze, closes out the '80s and welcomes the '90s with the most '90s-adjacent song in the chart's short history.
Hearing this, I am struck by how much Jesus Jones owes to the Jesus and Mary Chain (and not just because they both reference the Messiah in their names). "Real Real Real" especially sounds like a smoother version of what's happening on "Blues From a Gun."
I hadn't heard "Real Real Real" in many years. It's not in rotation on most stations (a good "lost song" candidate since it was #4 on the Hot 100 as the follow-up single to "Right Here Right Now"). But I see what you're saying. It's like they distilled JAMC's track into something that may have been more palatable for mainstream audiences. It's right around that time that you start to see more crossover success from the Modern Rock Tracks chart on the Hot 100. Nice connection, Mark! And thanks for reminding me about that JJ track. It's pretty great!
