Following the huge success of its 1987 hit album "Kick," INXS tops the Modern Rock Charts for the first and only time with a song about dyed-blonde hair
Cool collection of tracks, Matt! Pardon my butting in, but I can pick up a cue.....If you've never heard of Jellyfish before, someone's not been reading me!😉I've dropped their names on more than one occasion. Here's one (they're not the headliners, but I squoze 'em in an article about Todd and XTC), which features probably my fave of theirs, "The Ghost at No. 1": https://bradkyle.substack.com/p/audio-autopsy-1986-xtc-and-season
They only recorded two albums in the early '90s, and I was lucky enough to see them live, twice, in So. Cal at the time. They're notable (among many other things) for doing live covers you'd never expect....like "Baby Come Back" by Player! A 1978 forgettable AM pop smash now elevated to hip status by their choice of cover! Worth checking into are the careers, since, of former J-fish guitarist, Jason Faulkner, and keyboardist Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. (yes, he goes by that now).
Again, pardon my intrusion, Matt, but such is my love for Jellyfish!
Thank you for pointing this out! In my defense, I love your content, but this particular one slipped past me. It may have predated when I started following your work. And I'm still enrolled in "Cool Music I Didn't Know Existed 101"; you're teaching the doctoral-level stuff! Ha ha!
That said, I appreciate your linked writeup and the connection between Jellyfish and XTC, which I didn't connect on first listen but they are definitely a big influence on what I heard in their track. I really only came to know XTC for the first time with "Mayor of Simpleton," which I absolutely loved:
You're very kind, Matt.....I was, of course, teasing you a bit! Everything you said I was figuring....I just noticed I've got nearly 350 articles up, and of course, any would be easy to miss, especially if you hop on board after certain ones go up. Thanks for tolerating my good-natured snark!!😁
Jellyfish is on my Mt. Rushmore of power pop, joining Rasbperries, the Rubinoos, and The Records (the "R" triumvirate)! There are one or two artists who, on any given day, can be added to that august mount, but those 4 are pretty solid!
My history with XTC was very on/off, peaking in the late '80s with "Oranges and Lemons" and Dukes of Stratosphere. I was, at the time, aware of Todd producing "Skylarking," but when I read a quote from Partridge specifically about "Season Cycle," I had to probe deeper, hence that XTC article. And, with Jason Faulkner revealing the XTC influence (confirming what I had suspected), slam dunk!
As a "piece offering" (see what I did there?), may I offer you a friendly round of Tune Tag? I think our readers would enjoy that! Just e-mail me your first song, any artist, any era or genre, and I'll send you back my first song taggin' it, as well as some brief info on how we'll proceed! Thanks again, Matt!
Yes, that's the e-mail address....the one I just edited out of my comment (I've heard about your ruffian subbies)! No need to be nervous....it's an exhibition, not a competition (to discourage wagering)! Both our reader bases will love hearing how and why you tag the tunes you do!
What?!! That song was about Kylie? That is a fun piece of trivia I didn’t know. Very cool.
I didn't realize it, either. Always neat to find these trivia Easter eggs in songs!

I appreciate you keeping me on my toes and am grateful whenever you or anyone in this fun little corner of Substack can teach me something new!

Done! I'll admit, I'm both excited and nervous to play. The depth of my musical catalog is limited, but I'll do my best.
(I sent it to a Gmail address. The one you typed above was @email.com.)
