Alanis Morissette shakes up the post-grunge wave of alternative rock with "You Oughta Know," a song that changed the landscape of popular music and gave women a voice in a male-dominated era
This was such a good read Matt (laughed out loud a couple of times) and totally share your love and nostalgia for this song. What I love about Alanis' story is how she resisted being moulded into a pop princess (a la Debbie Gibson) which she really was being pressured into.
Another fantastic piece Matt, about a song I love. I remember EXACTLY where I was when I first heard this song: unpacking in a Vegas motel for a few nights with MTV on in the background. When this song started I stopped what I was doing and watched, transfixed, thinking WTF is this? Loved it from the jump. There’s only a handful of times that I can recall exactly where I was when I first heard a particular song but this one’s right near the top.
It’s amazing to me that “Say It Ain’t So” only peaked at #7. Like you, I don’t think it was worthy of pushing “You Oughta Know” from the top spot, but it was definitely a close second in my mind.
Excellent post! This is one of the greatest songs in rock history.
I'm shocked "Say It Ain't So" and "Stars" didn't chart higher. Both of those are fantastic songs.
Also, "Kiss From A Rose" being an alternative hit is a weird one.
Fantastic column, Matt! And what an impressively deep field of songs in this week's Chart Check. There are serious classics in there.

Nice compilation!
